Street Department

Title: Street Department Trainee

Starting Wage: $35,000.00 with benefits. 

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a wide variety of heavy-duty manual labor type work in building, paving, repair, cleaning, maintenance, and snow removal of Town streets and alley rights-of-way.

JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists in patching and sealing streets.
  • Will be cutting weeds along streets and alleys, around hedges and signs in vacant lots.
  • Will operate snow plow during snow season.
  • Will shovel sand, gravel, and asphalt to and from trucks.
  • Cleans and removes snow and ice from streets, alleys, and sidewalks.
  • May act as a flagman along Town streets to warn motorists of road construction work in progress.
  • Clean up trash and debris along Town streets and alleys.
  • Will pick up dead animals when required.
  • Rake, shovel, sweep, and pick up leaves as required.
  • Carry in or remove heavy desks, file cabinets, and other office equipment in Town offices.
  • Perform other physically heavy duties as may be required.
  • Assist WWTP and WTP staff as needed.

  • Good work record with prompt arrival and attendance.
  • Ability to communicate, gets along, and work well with fellow employees.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Valid Indiana Driver’s License.
  • Pass Pre-Employment Drug Screen and Background Check, Submit to Random Drug Testing

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Good mechanical aptitude.
  • Ability to use simple hand tools relating to basic job assignments.
  • Knowledge of and ability to follow safety rules and regulations required on assigned work projects
  • Ability to understand and follow instructions; ability to learn the methods and practices used in road repair; perform strenuous work in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to use shovel, rake, lute rake, leaf rake, sledgehammer, air hammer, hand tools, and other tools of the trade.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS

  • Follow one or two step instructions of routine and repetitive tasks.
  • Carry out detailed, but uninvolved written or verbal instructions.
  • Follow written, verbal, or diagrammatic instructions.
  • Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers.
  • Ability to write identifying information; request supplies verbally or in writing.
  • Good vision with or without correction.
  • Exerting in excess of 100 lbs. in force occasionally.
  • Exerting in excess of 50 lbs. of force frequently.
  • Exerting in excess of 20 lbs. of force constantly.
  • Body agility and equilibrium is emphasized.
  • Position requires above normal lifting, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, working, pushing, pulling, grasping, and use of legs, upper body, and back muscles

WORKING CONDITIONS

  • Duties are performed outside in a variety of weather conditions; extreme hot and cold, wind, rain, snow, dirt, dust, noise, grease, unsanitary conditions. Hazards are chemicals, moving and vibrating equipment and street vehicle traffic.

POST OFFER TESTING REQUIRED

  • The Town of Eaton is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore, successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
  • Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.

RESPONSIBILITY

Candidate does not supervise other staff members. Work can be complicated and non-standardized. Work is typically assigned by Superintendent, Town Council, Clerk-Treasurer, and Utility Clerk who provides general guidelines, but allows the incumbent the flexibility in planning and completing the objectives in a safe and timely manner. The safety and well-being of on-site team members is of utmost importance. It will be the candidate’s responsibility to study materials outside of normal business hours, in addition to the time allotted during normal working hours for education and training purposes. The candidate is required to reside within a reasonable distance to the Town of Eaton to adequately meet response times associated with the required on-call rotation (preferred to reside in Delaware County, 30-minute response time). Current working hours are Monday-Friday from 7:30am to 4:00pm with occasional mandatory overtime in emergency situations. 30-minute non-paid lunch break. Weekend and Holiday work and On-call staffing required on a rotational basis.
